I remember a few tears streaming down my face on the way home that day, but I was mostly feeling numb and speechless. It would take a while for this news to fully set in.
"Was all of this really true? Was there really nothing?" I asked myself. Part of me hoped that perhaps it wasn't.
Being only 16 at the time, I hadn’t given much thought to starting a family, or the possibility that I might not be able to down the road. It is one of those things that has become more real as I have gotten older.
The next step was to get another blood test. This one would be to analyze my chromosomes. Depending on what came of the results, it would give us a better sense of what direction we should take going forward. I would also have to start hormone therapy immediately to compensate for what my body wasn't producing on its own, and I would have to take them for most of my life.

About a couple of weeks later, I was back in the doctor’s office to discuss the results.
The doctor explained that the chromosome analysis showed that I was missing one of my X chromosomes, a condition also known as Turner Syndrome. This explained why there were no ovaries or uterus on the ultrasound. Before this moment, I had never heard of Turner Syndrome or what it was, and I became determined to learn more.
